China’s fascination with glass may have gone too far

China has been the site of many recent, high-profile glass attractions – bridges, walkouts, observation platforms and the like. The goal of these attractions are usually entertainment, but China may have taken its love affair with glass just one step too far.

Tourists at Shiyan Lake in the country’s Hunan Province can take full advantage of the park’s public restrooms, which are made entirely of glass, but at least on the facilities’ first day in action, most visitors chose not to.

The bathrooms are perched above the area’s spectacular forests, and feature glass-walled stalls and glass floors. The glass walls and stall doors are not heavily frosted, so it’s possible for other park visitors to see inside each cubicle, and there’s not much visual separation between the men’s and women’s restrooms. The floors in the treetop lavs are made from clear glass.

Most tourists have expressed a great deal of reservation about using the all-glass lavatories, and the concept gives new meaning to the French phrase, “natural break.” Nonetheless, some brave visitors have made good use of the treetop potties, while others have said that their need to go outweighed their need for privacy.

If you’re considering a frosted glass project, you might consider an alternative that produces similar results. Glassprimer™ glass paint offers a frosted finish on its paint that creates a frosted effect without the cost associated with frosted glass. And unlike frosted glass, which is created using a chemical or mechanical abrading process, Glassprimer™ glass paint comes in virtually any color. You don’t need to settle for traditional white, although virtually any shade of white is available!

Glassprimer™ glass paint provides excellent coverage for about $1 per square foot, which is less expensive than traditional frosted glass. In addition, Glassprimer™ glass paint bonds permanently with glass surfaces, so it won’t chip, fade or peel, even in direct sunlight.

Decorating with Glass

Decorating with Glass

Decorating with Glass

When the task is to decorate a room, most people focus on colors, furnishings, textures and flooring. One important element of decorating is light, and the source of most natural light is the window. Glass is an integral part of a decorating scheme, so it’s important to remember it when making a decorating plan.

Include glass in your decorating plan

Windows have two primary purposes – light and ventilation. In some cases, a window is non-operable, so letting in light is its only gig. Light’s visible components are definitely desirable, but light has invisible components that bring in unwanted (or much wanted) heat.

Light and the accompanying heat raise the temperature of a room. That might be desirable in some settings, and highly undesirable in others. With an operable window, you have the option of ventilating with natural air. With inoperable glass, your only option is to turn up the air conditioning.

Letting in light means letting others have a view of your interior space. In most cases, that’s not what you want, so a decorating plan that includes glass will need to take into account the need for privacy.

You can “privatize” your window glass with a wide range of window treatments – including blinds, shades, drapes and shutters. You can also use frosted or coated glass to limit the ability to see out of the window without completely restricting the light that gets in.

Glassprimer™ glass paint offers a frosted effect paint that enables you to “frost” ordinary glass at a fraction of the cost of true frosted glass. Glassprimer™ glass paint creates a permanent bond with the glass surface, so once the paint has cured, it won’t come off.

Glassprimer™ glass paint also offers exceptional UV resistance, which means that it rejects some of the heat-generating light wavelengths that raise the temperature of a room, and bleach out colors in carpets, fabrics and hard surfaces.

Getting more privacy from glass

Getting more privacy from glass

Getting more privacy from glass

There’s always that one space in your home that would benefit from a little privacy. It’s the room with the misplaced window, or the unattractive view of the street or the building next door. You like the natural light it provides – just not the view. There are ways to keep the light from this window without having to put up with its issues.

Close the window, keep the glass

Curtains, blinds and shades can take you only so far. Yes, they can disguise the view, but in doing so, they also take away the light. Unless you’re ok with that, you need a better solution for those times when you need or want daylight.

Frosted glass allows most visible light to pass, but eliminates the view either into or out of the room. Frosted glass is a great option for the bathroom or bedroom. It can also work for windows that have an unattractive view of the building next door. Here’s the rub. Frosted glass is expensive. Traditional frosted glass uses a chemical or mechanical process to abrade the surface of the glass. It’s a permanent solution, so once it’s installed, it’s yours.

You can create your own frosted glass using Glassprimer™ glass paint. Glassprimer™ glass paint makes a permanent bond with the glass surface, so just like frosted glass, it’s forever. You can apply Glassprimer™ glass paint directly to the glass, using a brush, roller or a high-volume, low pressure paint sprayer. Minimal surface preparation is required, and you can order Glassprimer™ glass paint in any color with a frosted effect.

The benefit of using Glassprimer™ glass paint is that unlike true frosted glass, you can get it in virtually any color. Frosted glass is – of course – “glass colored.” It’s made by modifying the surface of the glass, rather than applied as a coating. If you use Glassprimer™ glass paint, you can incorporate color into your decorating scheme. You can create a translucent effect on glass in a color scheme that matches your room décor for about $1 per square foot of coverage. White always works for the frosted effect, but if you’re going for something more, Glassprimer™ glass paint is your go-to option.

You can also use Glassprimer™ glass paint to dress up interior glass walls and partitions. Use it in conference rooms or offices to minimize distractions, control light and heat gain, and to perk up an otherwise plain space. The glass partition can still transmit visible light into the space, and you can control how much of the glass partition is coated.
