Hotel Hubertus Glass Pool Rises To A New Space

Hotel Hubertus’s Glass Pool Takes Swimming To A New Space

If you’re a fan of swimming in glass bottomed pools, you’ll want to save your pennies for a trip to Italy. The newly renovated Hotel Hubertus is a skiing and hiking resort nestled in the Dolomites in Valdora Bozen. The hotel has been remodeled, redesigned and expanded.

Being in the mountains, the hotel is already nearly 5,000 feet above sea level, but that didn’t stop the designers from making the hotel’s pool even more attractive to those who like a view from above. The new pool combines the concept of an infinity pool with that of a cantilevered pool, to great effect. Swimmers get great views in all directions, including down, thanks to the glass-bottomed tank.

The new pool is more than 80 feet long, and 55 of those feed overhang the Dolomite cliffs. The pool is blended artfully into the surrounding terrain; its sides are faced with anthracite-colored stone. The “infinity” pool gives swimmers the impression that the pool water vanishes into the nothingness at the visible edge of the tank.

The pool appears to be supported by native larch trees. In reality, larch tree trunks were debarked and installed beneath the pool in an aesthetically pleasing pattern. Larch trees are also used extensively inside the renovated hotel’s common areas.

The renovation of the lodge included the addition of more than a dozen new suites, and takes every advantage of the surrounding environment, which happens to be a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. In addition to the cantilevered pool, the property has five other pools – both indoor and outdoor – that are open to guests. Skiing and golf courses are also locally available.

Des Moines Apartment May Get Glass Pool

Des Moines Apartment May Get Glass Pool

Des Moines Apartment May Get Glass Pool

A 26-story apartment building proposed for construction in downtown Des Moines may include a cantilevered glass pool. The design calls for the 11,000-gallon glass pool to be suspended over the building’s west side. If built, the pool would have glass walls and a glass bottom panel, and would extend 11 feet beyond the edge of the building.

Blackbird Investments is building the $85 million development, and believes that the uniqueness of the glass pool will bring additional interest to the building. As designed, the structure can hold a pool about twice as large. According to the developers, the pool will add about $250,000 to the price of the building, and will be reserved for tenant use only. The glass walls of the pool will be about 6 inches thick, and consist of about 10 layers of laminated glass.

Cantilevered pools are relatively uncommon, and are found mostly at hotels in larger cities, and on cruise ships. The pool, if built, will be the only cantilevered pool in Des Moines.

Concrete provides the structure for cantilevered pools, and must take into account expansion and contraction that occurs naturally as the result of changes in temperature year-round. In the summer, the concrete deck can reach temperatures as high as 140° F. In the winter, temperatures can dip below 0° F. That variation in temperature can cause concrete to expand or contract by as much as in inch. Aside from temperature, the pool deck must also be able to accommodate movement in the building.

Swimmers will be able to see out the bottom of the pool, thanks to glass bottom panels. They’ll have a view of 801 Grand, the tallest building in Iowa, and Pappajohn Sculpture Park, a popular art installation in Des Moines.

Glass bottom pool a first for Dallas

Glass bottom pool a first for Dallas

Glass bottom pool a first for Dallas

A Dallas high rise under construction will join a growing list of structures that feature a glass bottom swimming pool. The One Uptown development is a mixed-use structure that will include nearly 200 apartment residences, nearly 20,000 square feet of restaurant space and a 480-car underground parking structure. The design also calls for a glass bottom swimming pool integrated into a two-story restaurant. The pool will sit directly over the building’s main entrance.

Glass bottom pool differ from hanging pools

One Uptown will offer Dallas’ first glass bottom pool, a feature that’s notably different from the Joule Dallas hotel’s “hanging pool,” which dangles 8 feet beyond the building’s edge, and 10 floors above the street. That pool has a Plexiglas™ side and bottom, only for the portion of the pool that extends past the building. Several other hotels around the world, including The Hilton Hotel Auckland, The Intercontinental Festival City Hotel in Dubai, the Holiday Inn Shanghai and the Adelphi Hotel in Melbourne also feature cantilevered pools.

A new “sky pool” is under construction in central London, and will be a fully transparent pool that is suspended 115 feet above ground. The Sky Pool will join two adjacent residential buildings, and is made of 20-cm thick Plexiglas™. It is expected to open in 2018.

The addition of glass bottom pools is supposed to provide swimmers with a new view on their cities, and their cities with a new view on them. The designer of the Sky Pool in London stated that he wanted to create the impression of floating through the air in central London, and that the design would attempt something that’s never been done before.

Glass bottom pools and hanging pools represent one creative use of glass that consumers can expect to see more frequently in commercial buildings.
